2.7 Million Drivers With Bad Eye Sight

A recent survey from Ensure, car insurance provider, has shown that 2.7 million drivers admitted they would probably fail a driving test if they were to take it again because of poor eyesight. 50% of those questioned by the insurer revealed their eyesight had deteriorated since the time they’d first taken their driving test, while 42% say they have to squint or slow down to read road signs.

A further 28% ask the other people in the car with them to read road signs whilst driving. Whilst another 24% of motorists admitted to getting behind the wheel without wearing their prescription glasses.

Mike Pickard, the Ensure’s head of risk and underwriting, said “We urge all motorists to have their eyes examined regularly and to make sure they always wear their glasses if required whilst driving.”

In 2009 4,000 people were banned from driving in just 2009 for poor vision. Could this number increase during 2011?

Should regular eye sight test be compulsory for every motorist on the road? Let us know what you think.
