Street lights to be dimmed

Thousands of miles of A-class roads could soon be a little darker under a plan to save money and reduce carbon emissions.

The Highways Agency, which has has already turned off the lights on more than 80 miles of the motorway network, has been told by the Government to “minimise obtrusive light” either by switching off lamps at certain times or turning them down. The Agency will soon begin a survey of where this can be done on the 2,500 miles of A roads it controls.

Nigel Parry, of the Institution of Lighting Professionals, said technology enabled lights to be controlled individually and remotely. “The idea is that when traffic is busy, such as during the morning and evening rush hour, you have them at their brightest,” he said.

“When the traffic disappears you can dim them. You can maintain safety and use half as much energy.”
