Figures from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), responsible for compensating innocent motorists who have been involved in accidents with uninsured drivers, Bordesley in Birmingham is the worst area for uninsured drivers. Almost a third of drivers in this area are uninsured.
It has been suggested that there are 1.4 million drivers on the road who are uninsured, a problem for insurance providers who are paying out £500 million a year to cover the costs caused by uninsured drivers. On average 23,000 people are injured and 160 are killed every year by drivers who have not obtained motor insurance and are therefore untraceable.
Uninsured driving figures have dropped by 25 per cent in five years but this could be down to continuous insurance enforcement which was introduced in June 2011 for all vehicles, even for those that are not being used by their owners. More on Continuous Car Insurance
Ashton West, MIB chief executive, argued “We cannot stand by and let uninsured driving continue, otherwise the honest motorist will keep paying the bills for the injury and damage”.
